Real-life practice for dogs who find the world a bit difficult
Calm & Connected is a small, supportive training group for dogs who find being around other dogs, people or busy environments difficult.
Your dog might be nervous, frustrated, over-excited or easily overwhelmed. They may bark, lunge, pull, stare, become very excited or struggle to listen to you on walks. We will help them learn how to notice what's around them and be able to cope.
What happens in a session?
Groups are deliberately small, with plenty of space between dogs. They are held in carefully selected public spaces in the Chesterfield area so we can practise in real-life situations while keeping things as manageable as possible.
Depending on your dog's needs, we might practise:
- calmly getting out of the car and entering the environment
- finding a comfortable distance from other dogs
- walking and moving around other dogs
- checking in with you
- food searches and sniffing
- simple engagement games
- seeing another dog without needing to react
- moving away when something becomes too difficult
- settling and recovering after excitement or stress
There's lots of opportunity to ask questions and get advice and support.
Sometimes the most useful thing a dog can practise is simply being there and realising they don't have to do anything about the other dogs.
Working at your dog's pace
There isn't one distance or exercise that's right for every dog.
One dog might be happily working twenty metres away while another needs much more space. Another might be ready to walk past a dog or practise moving a little closer. We'll use your dog's body language and behaviour to decide what is appropriate. The goal isn't to see how close we can get.
It's to create successful experiences your dog can learn from.
Learning what to do in real life
A big part of Calm & Connected is helping you feel more confident too, as well as meeting other people who understand some of the struggles that can come with walking a dog who finds things difficult.
When walks feel difficult, it's very easy to start questioning whether you're doing the right thing. Should you move away? Should you stay? Are you avoiding too much? What should you do when your dog does react?
The group gives you somewhere to practise these decisions with support. We'll talk about what your dog is communicating, when to give them more space, when they're ready for a little more challenge and what you can do when something unexpected happens.
You'll also learn practical skills and exercises to take away and practise between sessions, so the learning continues on your everyday walks. The aim is for both you and your dog to build skills over time, and for you to feel more confident trusting your own judgement and knowing what your dog needs.
Because real walks aren't perfectly controlled. Dogs appear around corners. People stop to talk. Paths become narrow. Sometimes things don't go according to plan.
Calm & Connected gives you an opportunity to practise in a supportive environment, then take what you've learned out into real life.
What Calm & Connected isn't
It isn't about forcing dogs to face things they're frightened of or aren't currently able to cope with.
It isn't about dogs greeting each other.
It isn't about correcting reactions.
It isn't about expecting perfect behaviour.
It's about giving dogs space, choice, successful experiences and useful skills,
while helping you understand your dog, feel more confident and, importantly,
see that things can get better.
